Fang Bing noted that with the continuous technological progress of the 052 destroyer series, a large number of 052D guided missile destroyers will be built and serve as the main and core battleship in future Chinese ocean-going naval force and aircraft carrier formation.

Fang Bing stressed that although the 052D guided missile destroyer represents the highest level of China’s destroyers in service, it’s not the final version of the Chinese guided missile destroyer, which, as the future main warship of the PLAN, will surely and steadily evolve toward the 10,000-ton class large-size destroyer.

He also pointed out that the 052D guided missile destroyer is nearly 1/3 tonnage smaller than the Arleigh Burke II Destroyer of the U.S. and the Kongō Air Warfare Destroyer of Japan.

If the tonnage is small, displacement and ammunition load will be hard to be increased. With constant improvement of the power device used in future naval vessels, it’s possible for China to build destroyers with larger tonnages, Fang noted.

Meanwhile, in terms of increasing the ammunition load and improving the fighting capacity of the vessel, the guided missile destroyer, as the future main warship of the PLAN, will definitely evolve toward the 10,000-ton class large-size destroyer,” said Fang Bing.
